Proud to be a Gooner

It was so close.

Although it was pretty much inevitable that Arsenal were going to get knocked out of the Champions League, there was still a glimmer of hope after the strong comeback against Tottenham and the vital win over Liverpool in the Premier League.

A four goal defecit in the Champions League had never been overcome before, but it looked incredibly promising as Arsenal dominated for at least 80% of the game. At half-time they were leading 3-0 against a lethargic looking Milan and the light at the end of the tunnel was getting ever closer. Sat watching it in my bed, I really did have the belief that miracles could happen.

Unfortunately, the task was just too great.

Despite excellent performances from the whole squad (notably Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rosicky and of course, Van Persie), that one more goal that would have taken the game to extra-time just didn’t happen. Did the unlikely blunder from Van Persie ruin Arsenal’s chances? I don’t know, but I’m not going to hold it against him after his fantastic run this season.

With the effort that the team made last night, even the most doubtful Arsenal fan must be proud. Arsenal have shown that not only today, but also in their recent Premier League games, that belief is a very influential thing. It was a difficult loss, but one that is impossible to be dissapointed with. Arsenal have now regained their pride, and now have to put all their focus into securing this fourth place spot in the Premier League. After last night, I have no doubt in my mind that it will happen – there’s even a strong chance of overtaking Spurs. Either way, it’s safe to say that through the highs and lows, I’m proud to be a Gooner.
